In order to make purchasing auto insurance easier, we’ve provided some definitions to help you understand your coverages. Ask your insurance agent to fully explain your policy so you understand what coverage you have chosen.
Comprehensive:
Covers all direct and accidental loss, which is not caused by collision or upset. Coverage includes damage from: contact with bird or animal; falling or flying objects; theft or larceny; fire; windstorm; hail, water or flood; malicious mischief or vandalism; riot or civil commotion; breakage of glass; explosion or earthquake. The insurance company will pay the cost to fix the damages or for replacement of the vehicle, whichever is less, minus any deductible. This is an optional coverage unless your vehicle is financed or leased.
Collision:
Covers damage to your vehicle in an accident caused by impact with another vehicle or object. The insurance company will pay the cost to fix the damages or for replacement of the vehicle, whichever is less, minus any deductible. This is an optional coverage unless your vehicle is financed or leased.
Property Damage Liability:
Provides coverage for damages to others caused by the insured’s auto and for which the insured is legally responsible. Coverage is for damages resulting from ownership, maintenance, use, loading or unloading of the covered auto. Damages must involve property damage, which could include other autos, other property (house, mailbox, light pole, tree, etc.). The insurance company will pay to fix or replace the damaged items (and possibly cost for a rental car) up to the limits stated on policyholders declarations page. Most states require this coverage and have their own minimum liability requirements
Bodily Injury Liability:
Provides coverage for injuries to others caused by the insured’s auto and for which the insured is legally responsible. Coverage is for injury resulting from ownership, maintenance, use, loading or unloading of the covered auto. Damages must involve bodily injury or death to another person. The insurance company will pay for medical bills and lost wages of injured person/people up to the limits stated on policyholders declarations page. Most states require this coverage and have their own minimum liability requirements
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist:
This is designed to meet the problem of bodily injury caused by an uninsured driver, a hit-and-run driver, or a driver whose insurance company is insolvent(bankrupt). Those covered are the policyholder and resident relatives. The insurance company will pay for medical bills, lost wages and property damages of the insured up to the limits stated on the policyholder declarations page, minus any deductibles. This is an optional coverage in most states.
Personal Injury Protection/Medical Payments:
Covers necessary expenses for medical or funeral services provided to the insured and their passengers as a result of an accident. The insurance company will only pay up to the limits stated on the policyholder’s declarations page, minus any deducible.
Loss of Use (Rental Car Reimbursement):
Pays for a rental car while your vehicle is being repaired up to the selected limit stated on the policy.
Towing and Labor:
Pays for towing expenses from the point of vehicle disablement and labor expense for repairs made at point of vehicle disablement up to selected limit as stated in policy.
